Emerald Coast
Here are four important things to know about the Emerald Coast before moving here.
Before you move to our coastal area—which includes Pensacola, Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, and Panama City Beach— keep these four things in mind:
1. Our beaches are made out of grounded quartz crystals. They’re absolutely stunning to see; when you walk on them, it looks like snow. It’s said that our beaches have healing properties, and physicians send their clients here for health and wellness. The white sand under the waves is also why our area is called “The Emerald Coast.”
2. Snow crab is not a local catch. Many people order snow crab here thinking that they’re getting fresh seafood, but snow crab comes from British Columbia and Alaska. The blue crab, however, is local, and it’s a true delicacy to the area. Blue crab is served as fried crab balls or as sauteed crab claws. Beyond the crab, royal red shrimp, oysters, scallops, mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna, cobia, and so much more can be found in the amazing seafood restaurants that dot the area. Four of my favorites include Stinky’s Fish Camp in Santa Rosa Beach, Harbor Docks, Dewey Destin’s, and Boshamps in Destin.

3. The cost of living is very affordable. You can have a luxurious lifestyle on somewhat of a budget. It doesn’t cost much to hop on a beach cruise or bicycle and travel down the coast to check out the scenery, hit the beach, cast a line, or check out our beautiful state parks. You can visit the bay for boating and jet-skiing, and just north of us, you can find beautiful, spring-fed areas for canoeing and kayaking.
4. The people are friendly. Almost everyone you’ll meet here is only here because they want to be. We have an awesome way of life with a little Southern hospitality thrown in. This is a place where people can get away from the hustle and bustle and just relax.
We think this would be an excellent place for you to call home, or at least a new vacation spot. We’d be honored to be your local connection; three generations of my own family are linked to the Emerald Coast.
